Keith Rankin Essay – Unrented Rentals and Property Hoarders

July 5, 2021

Analysis by Keith Rankin. I was encouraged to hear Nicola Willis, National Party’s spokesperson on housing, make the key point that the central problem in New Zealand’s housing crisis is that of people being squeezed out of the private rental market. I made this point and more in detail earlier this year (Solving the Housing ... <a title="Keith Rankin Essay – Unrented Rentals and Property Hoarders" class="read-more" href="https://eveningreport.nz/2021/07/05/keith-rankin-essay-unrented-rentals-and-property-hoarders/" aria-label="Read more about Keith Rankin Essay – Unrented Rentals and Property Hoarders">Read more</a>

Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Excess Deaths by Age Cohort, Adjusted

July 2, 2021

Analysis by Keith Rankin. On 21 June 2021 I published this chart, showing high levels of excess deaths in Aotearoa, for all age groups. However, the source data provide a somewhat crude measure of excess deaths. The measure may be distorted by demographic changes; the rate of population growth, and changes to the age distribution ... <a title="Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Excess Deaths by Age Cohort, Adjusted" class="read-more" href="https://eveningreport.nz/2021/07/02/keith-rankin-chart-analysis-excess-deaths-by-age-cohort-adjusted/" aria-label="Read more about Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Excess Deaths by Age Cohort, Adjusted">Read more</a>

Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Excess Deaths by Age Cohort: New Zealand and comparator countries

June 23, 2021

Analysis by Keith Rankin. The international source for these data calculates the percentage increase (decrease if negative) of deaths compared to ‘expected deaths’. There is a weakness in the data, in that ‘expected deaths’ is simply the average for 2015 to 2019. Thus, it does not account for rising populations in the various age cohorts. ... <a title="Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Excess Deaths by Age Cohort: New Zealand and comparator countries" class="read-more" href="https://eveningreport.nz/2021/06/23/keith-rankin-chart-analysis-excess-deaths-by-age-cohort-new-zealand-and-comparator-countries/" aria-label="Read more about Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Excess Deaths by Age Cohort: New Zealand and comparator countries">Read more</a>

Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Covid-19 in June 2021

June 19, 2021

Analysis by Keith Rankin. While India’s well-publicised Covid19 outbreak came quickly and is well on its way out, South America continues to show the greatest difficulty in throwing off this disease. Some of the most prominent South American countries this year were not prominent in 2020. Of particular note are the ‘Guianas’: Dutch (Suriname), British ... <a title="Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Covid-19 in June 2021" class="read-more" href="https://eveningreport.nz/2021/06/19/keith-rankin-chart-analysis-covid-19-in-june-2021/" aria-label="Read more about Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Covid-19 in June 2021">Read more</a>

Keith Rankin Analysis – Policies for Reducing the Environmental Costs of Urban Transport

June 18, 2021

Analysis by Keith Rankin. Environmental costs are a big deal, which need to be properly factored into our economic decision-making. Last week the Government announced a rebate scheme for electric and hybrid vehicles. These days we emphasise the very important greenhouse costs arising from the burning of fossil fuels: coal, petrol, gas. But they are ... <a title="Keith Rankin Analysis – Policies for Reducing the Environmental Costs of Urban Transport" class="read-more" href="https://eveningreport.nz/2021/06/18/keith-rankin-analysis-policies-for-reducing-the-environmental-costs-of-urban-transport/" aria-label="Read more about Keith Rankin Analysis – Policies for Reducing the Environmental Costs of Urban Transport">Read more</a>

Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Charts on excess deaths in the era of Covid19

June 9, 2021

Analysis by Keith Rankin. Covid-19: Excess Deaths, the picture in Europe and the Americas – Last Friday I posted this chart showing ‘excess deaths’ in 2020 and early 2021, as quarterly averages. The chart showed New Zealand and Australia alongside three Scandinavian countries and South Korea. These are all countries with low Covid19 death tolls, and ... <a title="Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Charts on excess deaths in the era of Covid19" class="read-more" href="https://eveningreport.nz/2021/06/09/keith-rankin-chart-analysis-charts-on-excess-deaths-in-the-era-of-covid19/" aria-label="Read more about Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Charts on excess deaths in the era of Covid19">Read more</a>

Keith Rankin Chart Analysis: Covid19 and excess deaths

June 4, 2021

Analysis by Keith Rankin. New Zealand’s rosy Covid19 picture does not look so good, once we do an analysis of excess deaths. Calculating excess deaths is the new statistical procedure to evaluate the true toll of Covid19. (I did an excess deaths’ Smithometer analysis of the 1918 influenza pandemic in New Zealand.) For this chart, ... <a title="Keith Rankin Chart Analysis: Covid19 and excess deaths" class="read-more" href="https://eveningreport.nz/2021/06/04/keith-rankin-chart-analysis-covid19-and-excess-deaths/" aria-label="Read more about Keith Rankin Chart Analysis: Covid19 and excess deaths">Read more</a>

Keith Rankin Analysis – China, the Coronavirus, Australia, and a yearning for World War 3

June 2, 2021

Analysis by Keith Rankin. There has been a lot of western angst shown towards China this year, only a miniscule amount of which can be attributed to geopolitical threats coming from China. Leading the charge of the anti-China brigade is Australia. I commented about a month ago on this matter, noting the tendency amongst many ... <a title="Keith Rankin Analysis – China, the Coronavirus, Australia, and a yearning for World War 3" class="read-more" href="https://eveningreport.nz/2021/06/02/keith-rankin-analysis-china-the-coronavirus-australia-and-a-yearning-for-world-war-3/" aria-label="Read more about Keith Rankin Analysis – China, the Coronavirus, Australia, and a yearning for World War 3">Read more</a>

Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Covid-19 India update (compare with three weeks ago)

May 28, 2021

Covid-19: Covid19 India update – Analysis by Keith Rankin. India’s reported cases of Covid19, though still high, are well down on early May (see my India charts from three weeks ago). Maharashtra (Mumbai) and Delhi have markedly fewer cases than at their peaks. West Bengal (with Kolkata) is showing more cases, though not dramatically so ... <a title="Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Covid-19 India update (compare with three weeks ago)" class="read-more" href="https://eveningreport.nz/2021/05/28/keith-rankin-chart-analysis-covid-19-india-update-compare-with-three-weeks-ago/" aria-label="Read more about Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Covid-19 India update (compare with three weeks ago)">Read more</a>

Keith Rankin – Covid19 is far from gone, though probably not as bad in India as many believe

May 25, 2021

Sitting Ducks – Analysis by Keith Rankin. Covid19 is far from finished in the world’s more economically developed countries. And we – who live in these countries – continue to display a restrained racism towards large culturally different nations such as India and China. For example, we kept assuming that the main Covid19 risk country ... <a title="Keith Rankin – Covid19 is far from gone, though probably not as bad in India as many believe" class="read-more" href="https://eveningreport.nz/2021/05/25/keith-rankin-covid19-is-far-from-gone-though-probably-not-as-bad-in-india-as-many-believe/" aria-label="Read more about Keith Rankin – Covid19 is far from gone, though probably not as bad in India as many believe">Read more</a>

Keith Rankin Analysis – The Seventy-Thirty Problem, and the Māori Health Authority

May 21, 2021

Analysis by Keith Rankin. When policymakers try to fix things, they often mess up because of the way the problem is formulated and the ways that subsequent policies are targeted. A classic example was the Closing the Gaps initiative in the early 2000s. The problem – albeit simplified – is that some people are ‘advantaged’ ... <a title="Keith Rankin Analysis – The Seventy-Thirty Problem, and the Māori Health Authority" class="read-more" href="https://eveningreport.nz/2021/05/21/keith-rankin-analysis-the-seventy-thirty-problem-and-the-maori-health-authority/" aria-label="Read more about Keith Rankin Analysis – The Seventy-Thirty Problem, and the Māori Health Authority">Read more</a>

Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Covid-19: Covid19 League Charts for the 2nd Week of May

May 14, 2021

Analysis by Keith Rankin. It’s been a big month, so far, for the Maldive Islands. Further, some of New Zealand’s leading cricketers (including captain Kane Williamson) are manuhiri in the Maldives. Indian Ocean neighbour – the Seychelles – has even more reported new cases per capita than the Maldives. I guess that neither country did ... <a title="Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Covid-19: Covid19 League Charts for the 2nd Week of May" class="read-more" href="https://eveningreport.nz/2021/05/14/keith-rankin-chart-analysis-covid-19-covid19-league-charts-for-the-2nd-week-of-may/" aria-label="Read more about Keith Rankin Chart Analysis – Covid-19: Covid19 League Charts for the 2nd Week of May">Read more</a>
