The Conversation Canada invites applications for our newly designed Indigenous Affairs Editor-in-Residence. The Conversation Canada is an established, non-profit digital newsroom in its ninth year of operation. We belong to a proven global network of explanatory journalism sister sites in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, France, Spain and other locations.

This Editor-in-Residence is designed for a mid-career or established journalist, editor or scholar who wants to lead and expand our coverage of Indigenous issues, research and perspectives across Canada while maintaining space for their own external projects, writing or academic pursuits.

The Opportunity: The Editor-in-Residence will guide and shape The Conversation Canada’s coverage of research, policy, culture and community-led narratives on Indigenous issues.
Because our unique model pairs journalists with academic authors, you will act as a collaborative editor and mentor, helping faculty, graduate students and Knowledge Keepers translate complex scholarly research and lived experience into compelling, accessible and timely explanatory articles for a broad public audience.
This residency is ideal for an editor who is passionate about public education, ethical journalism and intellectual mentorship. Key Responsibilities: Editorial Curation: Develop creative, timely story ideas on a regular basis that align with the news agenda and centre Indigenous perspectives.
Residency Requirements: Commission, structurally edit and copyedit articles written by scholars and researchers. The target number of articles is six to eight per month. Ethical Leadership: Navigate and respect diverse cultural protocols, ensuring ethical storytelling and research communication.
Knowledge Mobilization: Deliver one to two virtual writing workshops or presentations to academic researchers and member institutions to demystify public writing. Network Expansion: Help bridge connections between TCC and Indigenous research networks across Canadian universities.
Editorial Experience: Five-plus years of professional reporting, writing or editing experience, ideally within a digital newsroom or publishing environment. Subject Matter Depth: A nuanced, systemic understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, politics, policy and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action.
Cultural Competency: An established network within Indigenous academic spaces and a demonstrated commitment to relational, respectful editing practices. Strong Structural Editing: The ability to preserve an author’s authentic academic voice and expertise while shaping the text for maximum clarity, engagement and public reach.
Bilingualism: Proficiency in French, or knowledge of an Indigenous language, is a strong asset but not required. Our Commitment: The Conversation Canada is committed to diversity, equity, and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds.
