New Zealand Red Cross is offering concerned Kiwis some practical ideas for how they can help make a difference in the refugee crisis.
“It’s difficult to know what we can do so far away from the terrible scenes we are seeing in the Mediterranean. Red Cross is there on the ground and our links with the international response mean that New Zealanders can directly support the people working on the beaches and areas where the need is greatest,” Secretary General, Tony Paine, said.
“This terrible crisis is bringing out the best in people all around the world, and New Zealanders can stand alongside the rest of humanity as we work together to ensure everyone on the planet has somewhere safe they can call home.”
He said Kiwis can help by:
• Donating to the Red Cross Mediterranean refugee Crisis Appeal – with the guarantee that 100% of funds donated will go to the Red Cross response on the ground in the worst affected countries and areas
• Donating through New Zealand Red Cross website to support the organisation’s work with new refugees in New Zealand.
• Become a refugee resettlement support volunteer who helps newly arrived ‘Kiwis’ settle into their new lives.
• Donating small household goods (i.e. not furniture, but things for setting up kitchens, bedding etc.) that will help turn houses into homes for refugee families who resettle in New Zealand. Donations of goods can be made at any New Zealand Red Cross Shop.
• Give someone from a refugee background a job, which is a key part of the resettlement process. This can be organised through the Red Cross’s Pathways to Employment programme.
To help refugees visit www.redcross.org.nz.
Mr Paine said New Zealand Red Cross was being inundated by requests from people asking how they can assist.
“Kiwis have always been generous in the face of global tragedies and we’ve always welcomed refugees fleeing violence. Sadly, the scale of the crisis means it’s time to say ‘we need to do more’.”

“To be selected for Choose Wool at NZFW has been an absolute honour, as PERRIAM truly represents what the show is celebrating – wool in NZ fashion.
About PERRIAM:

PERRIAM is a New Zealand-made merino clothing brand that embodies the comforting luxury inherent in the spirit of the high country. The heart of PERRIAM is Christina’s family and their farm, Bendigo Station in Central Otago – a place of rich history, pioneering spirit, enduring natural beauty and the home of the famous Shrek the Sheep. PERRIAM is about slow fashion, not fast fashion, but it is fashion-forward. PERRIAM celebrates the beauty amongst the busy-ness of life. A relatively new brand, PERRIAM Woman was launched in October 2014, along with a flagship retail store in Tarras and online store www.perriam.co.nz. PERRIAM Woman Winter 16 will be wholesaled throughout New Zealand for the first time. Little PERRIAM, the brand’s babies and children’s label, was launched in February 2015. Designer Christina Perriam also has her eyes on a growth plan that includes PERRIAM retail stores and intends on eventually launching PERRIAM Man, PERRIAM Sleep and PERRIAM Home.

Canterbury Police are appealing for everyone to keep a look out for 70 year old Noel Noonan when they travel to work or school this morning. He was last seen by those who knew him near the intersection of Middleton Road and Riccarton Road at around 2.40pm yesterday (24 February).
Mr Noonan is described as 177cm tall, slim build, distinctive walk (due to Parkinsons), black/greying short hair, blue eyes, fair skin and possibly has prescription glasses on a lanyard around his neck. He was last seen wearing grey ¾ length trousers, a polo shirt with light blue and dark blue horizontal stripes and sand shoes.
Canterbury Police would like to thank their Facebook followers and members of the public who have called them overnight with possible sightings of Mr Noonan since he went missing yesterday. While unconfirmed it is reassuring to know the community is keeping a look out for him too.
Mr Noonan is reliant on medication to keep him mobile every couple of hours and there are concerns that he is laying or sitting down somewhere and may be confused.
Police and Mr Noonan’s family have concerns for his wellbeing.
If you see Mr Noonan while you travel to/from work and school this morning please call 111 immediately.
This appeal will also be posted on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ChristchurchPolice
Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
NOTE: an update will be provided later on today.
