The Kiribati National Olympic Committee (KNOC) has confirmed the country will be represented in athletics and weightlifting at the Rio Olympic Games this month.

Chief-executive-officer of KNOC, Rota Onorio, told Radio Kiribati News that athletes Karitaake Tewaaki and John Ruka would compete in the 100m athletics event.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist David Katoatau will be competing in the weightlifting 105kg category.

The Minister of Sports David Collins and other sports officials will accompany the team in Rio.

This will be the island nations fourth appearance at a Summer Olympic Games. Kiribati first competed in 2004 when it was held in Athens.

The Olympic Games will be officially open in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 5 and close on August 21, 2016.
